New SONY phones are announced. They were originally slated for unveiling at MWC, but MWC was cancelled due to the Coronavirus. The new 2020 Sony phones are the Xperia 1 II and Xperia 10 II (pronounced “Mark 2” like the branding used for Sony’s Alpha cameras.)

Many reviewers seem to be panning the new naming. I think the naming is pretty cool. I 100% agree with this name structure, despite the ridicule from other reviewers, for example, Hadlee Simmons at Android Authority wrote: “a case of “I see what you were going with, but no. Just no.” I can’t figure out which I dislike more, but Sony’s approach is about on par with the harebrained decimal point system HMD Global uses for its Nokia phones. Sure, both work in theory as an alternative to counting from one upwards, but sometimes it’s better to keep things simple.” Naming scheme aside, I think the design of both new phones are brilliant and eye catching. The Xperia 1 seems a like and interesting flagship building on the unique 21:9 flagship released last year. The 21:9 screen is a very compelling USP, or unique selling point. I absolute love when smartphones have truly unique features that are uncommon or strange. Unique is memorable; unique is character. Building off the unique character of the flagship is the Xperia 10 II, which is the update to last year's Xperia 10. This is somehow the most head turning of the 2 announcement because there's quite a few large feature jumps for a mid range phone. Last years LCD is replaced by and OLED screen. This years version now has water-proofing all of sudden. These are two features that are other reserved for flagships.

No flagship pricing here though. This 10 II has a very good launch pricing. The phone should cost only 370 Euros. This makes it a little expensive for a budgdet or mid-range phone because it is over 300 Euros, but it also means it is dirt cheap for flagship, even affordable flagships, considering it's less than 500 Euros. This device is looking to be a rival to the leader of the affordable flagship class, the Samsung Galaxy A71. Though, it seems the Galaxy A71 beats the 10 II in every aspect except for water-proofing.
